Being a heavy-weight tea consumer, I have some expertise in this area. Yes, I love my morning coffee more than anything but for me tea is magic! In the past, when I drank around 10 huge cups of coffee a day, I was feeling the after effects as expected but tea doesn’t have such strong effects which makes a great alternative for people like me who just can not do without hot beverages all along the day.
A fun fact about tea comes from its name. With only a few exceptions, tea is referred to by the variations of only two words which both come from Chinese. While tea was getting popular around the world over 2000 years ago, there were only two trade routes where tea could come from; land and sea. The land route (the famous Silk Road) started from inland China where the the plant is called “cha” and wherever it brought tea, a variation of “cha” was used.
The other name, “te” is used in the coastal provinces of China and when the Dutch started tea trade using the sea route in the 17th century, they knew it with the coastal name so they introduced it to Europe with the name “te”. The only exception to this in Europe is Portugal because although the Portuguese started their tea trade earlier than the Dutch, they imported tea from Macao which uses the name “cha” so the Portuguese use that instead of “te”.
